Corruption in the Industry.
In this assignment, we were asked to ask the company we were interviewing about corruption in the logistics industry. And that's exactly what we did. The managers at IFL Infinia said that they weren't going to sugarcoat anything regarding this issue and just tell us the truth since we are going into the industry, one day.
Basically, they said that with corruption, as long as there is demand, there will be supply. There will be problems we may face in the industry and the easiest solution to the problem is bribery, money is king, after all. The managers said that the declarer has to be honest when declaring shipments. Wrong declaration of the tariff code means that the wrong duty will be implemented upon the shipment and when that happens, Customs have the right to compound the company. For example, the compound for the mistake is RM 5,000 and from the point of view of a corrupted person, they will just deal with the Customs agent to just do an under-the-table payment to get away from the compound.
According to IFL Infinia, that was the most common kind of corruption in the industry, especially between consignors and Customs, which is an example for a government agency. Another example of corruption in the industry is issuing a higher amount of money in the invoice, when it reality the cost is lower, so that the person in charge of writing the invoice can embezzle some money.
That has been IFL Infinia's managers opinion on corruption in the industry.
